Topographic Maps

Today I have some nails that I am really excited to share with you! The program that I'm in at school involves a lot of map making. For many projects I sit at a computer for hours creating maps and writing models to make maps. One of my best friends, who also happens to be a polish junkie, was in the same program and suggested to me that I make some map nails. So these topographic maps are for you Jackie!

To create these nails I went to The Atlas of Canada, Topographic Maps and zoomed into an area around where I live. Then I just went to it replicating different features on the map onto my nails! I used a lot of polish for this so I will list them all below. The base colour is OPI Samoan Sand

I was so happy with how these turned out! Since some of the features are really thin I took a note out of Linda of Copy That Copy Cat's notebook and used a hair for some of the finer details. I cut a small piece of hair out of my own and then held that in tweezers while I painted on some of the rivers and contour lines. Might be strange I know, but I wouldn't have been able to get such fine detail otherwise!

The polishes used for the detail on the map are listed below:

Essie Mint Candy Apple
NYC Lexington Yellow
Barielle Swizzle Stix
Stripe Rite Striper Black
Stripe Rite Striper Red
Essence Walk on Air
China Glaze Fois Gras
Essie Pretty Edgy

If you have any questions about a specific nail or polish feel free to ask in the comments and I'll let you know!

I LOVED these nails. I posted a picture on my personal Facebook to show Jackie the night I did them and I had a lot of friends dying over them and being like these are my favourites ever! I'm rather proud of these and am happy that I can share something else that I love besides polish with you, map making!

After I did these talking to a friend I came up with a couple other geography themed nail ideas, so when school calms down a little bit I'll be continuing my geography themed series! :)

How do you like my topographic map nails?

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you have a fabulous day!

  7. I don't think using a hair is weird at all. I use a cat whisker sometimes for fine detail. :)

(a naturally shed whisker, of course!)
